The One-Line Answer
Understanding non-duality step by step is a process of discrimination (Viveka): first distinguish between the seer and the seen, then recognize that the witness in you is the same as the witness in all, and finally realize that the witness itself is the only reality—with no separation between subject and object, self and other, or you and the universe.
In one line: From seer and seen, to one without a second.
Key points:
- Non-duality (Advaita) means “not two”
- The world appears separate, but separation is an illusion
- Understanding is intellectual; realization is direct
- Step-by-step discrimination leads to direct recognition
- The final step is not a step; it is a leap beyond steps
Stage 1: Distinguish Seer from Seen (Drig-Drishya Viveka)
The first step is to understand that you are not what you see or experience.
| Seen (Drishya) | Seer (Drig) |
|---|---|
| The body | The awareness that knows the body |
| The mind | The awareness that knows thoughts |
| Emotions | The awareness that knows emotions |
| The world | The awareness that knows the world |
| Thoughts | The witness of thoughts |
Practical exercise: Look at your hand. You are aware of your hand. Ask: “Who is aware?” Do not answer with words. Feel the aware presence. That presence is the seer. Your hand is the seen. You are not the hand.
The Katha Upanishad (1.3.3-4) uses the chariot analogy: The master of the chariot is the Self. The chariot is the body. The charioteer is the intellect. The reins are the mind. The horses are the senses. The master is not any of them. The master is the seer.
Stage 2: See the Same Seer in All Beings
The seer in you is not different from the seer in another person, an animal, or a tree.
| Separate Selves (Illusion) | One Self (Truth) |
|---|---|
| “My awareness” | Awareness |
| “Your awareness” | The same awareness |
| “The dog’s awareness” | The same awareness |
| “The tree’s awareness” | The same awareness |
Practical exercise: Look at another person. First, see their body. Then see their personality. Then look deeper. Ask: “What is aware in them?” The awareness in you is the same as the awareness in them. It is not two awarenesses. It is one awareness.
The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 6, Verse 29-30) declares:
“When one sees the same Self dwelling in all beings, and all beings in the Self, then one is a true knower. Such a person never grieves.”
The same Self. Not different selves. One Self.
Stage 3: Recognize That the Seer Is Not an Object
The seer can never be seen. It can only be itself.
| Objects | The Seer |
|---|---|
| Can be seen | Cannot be seen (it is the seer) |
| Can be known | Cannot be known as an object (it is the knower) |
| Come and go | Never comes and goes |
| Change | Never changes |
Practical exercise: Try to see the seer. You cannot. You cannot see your own eyes without a mirror. And the reflection is not the eyes; it is an image. Similarly, you cannot see awareness. You can only be it.
The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (2.4.14) asks:
“How can the Knower be known?”
The Knower cannot be known as an object. The Knower can only be itself.
Stage 4: See That All Objects Appear in Awareness
Every object you have ever experienced—a tree, a sound, a thought, a feeling, a body—appears in your awareness.
| Object | Where Does It Appear? |
|---|---|
| The tree | In your awareness |
| The sound | In your awareness |
| The thought | In your awareness |
| The emotion | In your awareness |
| The body | In your awareness |
Practical exercise: Close your eyes. Notice a thought. Where does it appear? It appears in awareness. Notice a sound. Where does it appear? In the same awareness. You have never experienced anything outside of awareness. The world is not “out there.” It appears in you.
Stage 5: Recognize That You Are That Awareness
You are not the objects that appear. You are the awareness in which they appear.
| False Identification | True Identity |
|---|---|
| “I am the body” | “I am aware of the body” |
| “I am the thought” | “I am aware of the thought” |
| “I am the emotion” | “I am aware of the emotion” |
| “I am a person in the world” | “The world appears in me” |
Practical exercise: Sit quietly. Feel your body. You are aware of it. Notice a thought. You are aware of it. Notice a sound. You are aware of it. Now ask: “Who is aware of all of these?” Do not answer with words. Feel the aware presence. That presence is not the body, not the thought, not the sound. That presence is what you truly are.
The Aitareya Upanishad (3.3.7) declares:
“Prajnanam Brahma” — “Consciousness is Brahman.”
That consciousness is what you are.
Stage 6: See That Awareness Is One, Not Many
The awareness in you is the same as the awareness in everyone and everything.
| Many Awarenesses (Illusion) | One Awareness (Truth) |
|---|---|
| “My consciousness” | Consciousness |
| “Your consciousness” | The same consciousness |
| Separate containers | One infinite field |
Practical exercise: Sit in a room. Notice your awareness. Then look at another person. Do they have a different awareness? Or is it the same awareness appearing through two bodies? The reflection of the sun in two pots is the same sun. The awareness in two bodies is the same awareness.
Stage 7: Recognize That the World Is an Appearance (Mithya)
The world appears in awareness like a dream appears in the dreamer.
| Dream | Waking World (Mithya) |
|---|---|
| Appears in the dreamer | Appears in awareness |
| Real while dreaming | Real while ignorant |
| Unreal upon waking | Seen as Mithya upon Self-knowledge |
Practical exercise: Tonight, when you wake from a dream, notice how real the dream felt. Notice how it vanished. Ask: “Could the waking world also vanish as a separate reality?” Not physically. But as an independent reality.
The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2, Verse 16) states:
“The unreal has no being. The real never ceases to be.”
The world is not unreal. But it is not the final reality. Only awareness is.
Stage 8: Rest as the Witness (Sakshi Bhava)
Stop trying to understand non-duality. Start resting as the witness.
| Doing | Being |
|---|---|
| Understanding concepts | Resting as awareness |
| Thinking about non-duality | Being non-duality |
| Seeking | Finding |
| Effort | Effortless |
Practical exercise: Throughout the day, pause. Ask: “Who is aware right now?” Feel the witness. Rest there for a few seconds. Return to your activity. Do this 100 times a day. Non-duality will move from understanding to living.
The Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 5, Verse 8-9) describes the realized person:
“I do nothing at all,” thinks the steady knower of truth, even while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, walking, sleeping, breathing…
They are not thinking about non-duality. They are living it.
Stage 9: Let Go of All Concepts (Including Non-Duality)
The final step is to let go of even the concept of non-duality.
| Concept | Beyond Concepts |
|---|---|
| “I understand non-duality” | No “I” and no “non-duality” |
| “Everything is one” | No “everything” and no “one” |
| “There is only awareness” | No “awareness” as an object |
Practical exercise: Sit in silence. Do not try to understand anything. Do not try to be aware. You already are. Rest. Be.
The Mandukya Karika (2.32) declares:
“There is no creation, no destruction, no one in bondage, no one striving for liberation, no one liberated. This is the ultimate truth.”
No concepts. No duality. No non-duality. Only what is.
Summary Table: The 9 Steps
| Step | Practice | Realization |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Distinguish seer from seen | You are not objects |
| 2 | See the same seer in all | One Self, not many |
| 3 | Recognize seer is not an object | You cannot see awareness |
| 4 | See objects appear in awareness | The world is in you |
| 5 | Recognize you are awareness | Not the body or mind |
| 6 | See awareness is one | Not many separate awarenesses |
| 7 | See world as appearance (Mithya) | Like a dream |
| 8 | Rest as witness | Live non-duality |
| 9 | Let go of all concepts | Beyond words |
One-Line Summary
Understanding non-duality step by step is a process of discrimination: first distinguish seer from seen, then see the same seer in all, recognize objects appear in awareness, realize you are that awareness, see it as one, view the world as an appearance (Mithya), rest as the witness, and finally let go of all concepts—including non-duality itself.
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.
